SimplySteno is a speedbuilding program – we do not teach steno theory.  We work with students using EVERY theory – StenEd Theory, StarTran Theory, Phoenix Theory, Magnum Steno, RWG Theory, etc.  Because we don’t teach theory, we feel that we can stand back and really evaluate which theories work best.  Our conclusion…no conclusion.  The only certainties –   

1 – You should learn steno theory through a qualified program with qualified instructors.  Learning theory on your own is VERY difficult.

2 – No theory has proven to produce more court reporters than any other (by percentage taking it).  If it did, I would shout it from the rooftops.

3 – Once you’ve learned the foundation of your theory, it’s okay to mix and match from other theories.  Your theory is not the law.  You have freedom.  

4 – What matters is that your outlines translate correctly, don’t conflict, and come naturally to your fingers.  That’s it.  That’s where your speed will come from.

I lean toward StarTran Theory for a few reasons.  

1 – You’ll be learning from Marlene Struss, the creator of the theory.

2 – It uses the same teaching platform as SimplySteno, so you can expect structure and clarity.

3 – StarTran only teaches steno theory, so it’s 100% theory-focused.  

What is Steno Theory?

Consider a new house being built.  What is the first thing the builders do?  They lay down the cement foundation.  That’s steno theory.  In court reporting, steno theory is the foundation upon which the rest of your training will be built.

A weak foundation equals a weak body of work, so it’s important to make sure your steno theory is a solid one.  Without that, the house – or your steno learning – will never be complete.

Theory is the language which court reporters write.  Using the steno keyboard, pressing one key or several keys in combination creates a letter, number, sound, word or even a phrase.  The very best court reporters have a firm grasp of theory steno theory.
